Welcome to Desert Rat Design (dot com). This is the place where I showcase some of my project work and muse about design and design-related technology.
Before moving to Phoenix, Arizona, I lived most of my life in Chicago. That's where I learned my trade as a print and web graphic designer. In the corporate world, I've worked for advertising agencies and for in-house art departments at well-known professional services firms. As a freelance graphic designer, I've worked with small and large businesses, retail operations, entrepreneurs, and self-published authors (I am fluent in creating ebooks for eReaders such as the Kindle, Nook, and Apple's iBooks app).
Print will never die (at least not any time soon), but one can't deny the winds of change. In the past year, I've started working with Adobe's Digital Publishing Suite to create iPad and Android magazine apps. It's amazing technology and allows basically anyone to publish richly interactive, informational content (think art books, magazines, brochures) for sale through Apple's App Store or through the Android Marketplace. It's an amazing time to be a digital designer.
Though the majority of my day-to-day experience spans traditional print and web design, I am also handy when it comes to product photography, video editing (Final Cut Pro and Motion) and technical writing. I have shot hundreds of professional portraits and product photos, I've cut about a dozen corporate informational films, and I've written a handful of training manuals.
